Award for Scotland’s Rainforest Nature Champion

We’re delighted that Jenni Minto, MSP for Argyll and Bute (pictured here in green with colleagues from Plantlife and Woodland Trust), has won Scottish Environment LINK’s first ever Nature Champion Award. Since becoming the Nature Champion for Scotland’s Rainforest, Jenni has been extremely supportive of the Saving Scotland’s Rainforest project, supporting local initiatives, championing Scotland’s rainforest in parliamentary debates, and speaking at public events.

Innovative finance projects begin in Morvern

It could cost as much as £500m to fully restore Scotland’s rainforest – which presents us with a huge challenge. So, it’s great news that, thanks to funding from Investment Ready Nature Scotland and Natural Environment Research Council, Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) is kicking off new projects with RSPB and Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. These will trial pioneering ways to raise finance using a new, innovative funding platform whilst building a case study to support potential future biodiversity credits.

New funding for the rainforest

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS), one of the partner organisations of the Alliance for Scotland’s Rainforest (ASR), has received a £1.3m funding award from the Scottish Government for rainforest restoration. FLS is working closely with ASR organisations and others to ensure these funds can work as hard as possible by building capacity and linking up with the efforts of other landowners across landscapes. The work on the ground will include rhododendron control, deer management and restoring areas of rainforest that have previously been over-planted with conifers.

The RSPB has produced a brilliant new film about their brand-new nature reserve at Glencripesdale on the Morvern peninsula. Join Izzy Baker, the site manager, on a tour of the reserve, in which she explains why the site is so important for the special biodiversity of temperate rainforest.

Welcome to the Native Woods Co-op

We have another new partner joining our Alliance, which is now represented by 25 different organisations! The Native Woods Co-op works extensively across the rainforest zone advising woodland managers and supporting them with their decades of experience of rainforest management. The NWC will be represented by Gary Servant who works alongside Angus Bevan and Gordon Gray Stephens. Welcome!

Weekend reading: The Lost Rainforests of Britain

Guy Shrubsole moved to Devon in early 2020 and soon found out that his local wood is a fragment of temperate rainforest. This discovery led him on a journey throughout Britain to learn all about our forgotten rainforests, including Scotland, where he attended a rainforest blessing ceremony in Argyll and met some of our most passionate rainforest advocates. He shares all that he’s learned, along with his frustration about how we’ve neglected this habitat for so long, in this easy-to-read new book. A great Christmas gift!

Our highlights of 2022

It’s been another whirlwind year for the Alliance for Scotland’s Rainforest. Thanks for all your support. Our collaborative efforts are putting temperate rainforest on the map in Scotland like never before – and while the journey ahead is still very challenging, we’re as determined as ever to achieve our ultimate goal - the ecological restoration of Scotland’s rainforest.
