Gleann Shìldeag’s new rainforest

Horizontal rain didn’t put off the efforts of local school children and the wider community to kick off a drive to plant half a million trees in Strathcarron. In time, these trees will develop into a new rainforest, made up of Scots pine, birch, willow, oak, aspen, alder, hazel and juniper, all grown from local seeds. The site is part of the Glen Torridon Partnership Project, one of ASR’s Focus Projects, which is led by Woodland Trust.

Bringing elms back to Scotland’s rainforest

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has joined forces with John Muir Trust and the local community in Assynt to plant young elm trees in the hope of boosting the restoration of Scotland's fragile temperate rainforest. The young trees were grown from elms known to have survived the disease, in a quest to battle back against the 50-year scourge of Dutch elm disease.

Wild Pine Project starts with rainforest

A new project launched by Trees for Life and Woodland Trust aims to identify and save Scotland’s forgotten pinewoods. It will begin in the western Highlands, where Scots pines form part of Scotland’s rare temperate rainforest. Jane Sayers, wild pine project officer for Trees for Life, said: “Lost pinewoods are at particular risk because they are unrecognised and undocumented. We want to find them, assess their condition, and revive them before they are lost forever”.

Learn about ASR’s community engagement guidance

So the Community Woodlands Association is holding an online session on 23 April to raise awareness of this guidance among its members.
