The Lochaline tree nursery is part of RSPB Scotland’s Saving Morvern’s Rainforest project. Tree Nursery Manager, Helen Woolston give us the latest update…
This day has been a long time coming but we’re really excited to announce that work is finally underway at the Lochaline Tree Nursery!
It means we can soon start putting up polytunnels, creating growing beds and compost bays. And that means that we can look forward to sowing the seeds we collected locally during the autumn, onsite in the new nursery, and begin our journey of providing local provenance native trees to help restore Morvern’s woodlands.
This work will help strengthen Morvern’s temperate rainforest, making the biodiversity of the area more resilient. You can’t plant a rainforest, as it comprises so much more than just the trees, but you can plant saplings in areas which are lacking their own seed source, and the rainforest will slowly spread to provide habitats for lichens, fungi, animals and plants.

There have been some delays while sorting out the logistics with the tree nursery, so we are a few months behind schedule. But we’re confident that the seeds we have stored over winter will soon be bursting into life and will get us off to a good start!
There will also be opportunities to get involved. So if anyone who lives in the area local to Lochaline is interested in learning about what we are doing, wants to lend a hand, or just drop by for a chat, please do get in touch. We’ll have more details on weekly volunteering days and open days coming soon.
This project has been made possible due to support from the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund (NRF), managed by NatureScot, and private charitable trusts.
