The Common Ground Forum is a network of individuals and organisations involved in upland deer management across Scotland. It builds trust and strengthens relationships, enabling people and organisations to collaborate constructively. By working together, they are better placed to identify, address and ultimately overcome the diverse challenges facing the sector.
The Common Ground Forum began to take shape in 2020, when the Association of Deer Management Groups approached the ASR to explore ways of working together on sustainable deer management in the rainforest zone. Recognising that long-standing conflict was hindering collaboration across the sector, they brought in civic mediators to help build stronger relationships and support constructive, respectful dialogue.
This work eventually led to the establishment of the Common Ground Forum three years later. Although the Forum is not directly linked to ASR and covers the whole of upland Scotland, it has significant potential to help address the impacts of deer overgrazing on rainforest habitats, and is convened by the Saving Scotland’s Rainforest Programme Manager.
