The Alliance for Scotland’s Rainforest aims to demonstrate best practice in restoring and expanding this globally important habitat.

Below are some examples of large-scale partnership projects that others can learn from, as well as guidance for any organisation developing a landscape-scale project.

Balmacara

The Balmacara Estate, owned and managed by the National Trust for Scotland, is a beautiful mosaic of open heathland, scattered with birch woodland and some significant areas of oak and hazel rainforest, next to the coast near Kyle of Lochalsh in Ross-shire.

Coigach & Assynt Living Landscape Project

Coigach & Assynt Living Landscape is based in the far north west of Scotland, a partnership of community, charity and private landowners working together.

Glen Creran

Argyll and the Isles Coast and Countryside Trust is working with the community of Glen Creran (near Appin) to deliver a landscape-scale approach to controlling rhododendron.

Twelve best practice guidelines

These 12 best practice guidelines for developing landscape-scale ecological restoration projects have been created and endorsed by partner organisations of the Alliance for Scotland’s Rainforest (ASR).

Community engagement

Tackling the main threats to Scotland’s rainforest habitat requires collaborative action across multiple landholdings, with a commitment lasting many years. It can only be effective if local communities are involved and empowered at the outset.
