John Taylor
John is an Environment Forester for Forestry and Land Scotland. He is tasked with managing large areas of woodland in the heart of the rainforest zone. This involves managing the red deer population and restoring forests planted with non native conifers back to native woodland.
“The deer need the forest…but if we have them in too high densities, they browse off more tree seedlings than can naturally replace themselves. Deer management provides local employment, reduces traffic accidents even reduces methane emissions, a greenhouse gas.”
John Taylor
“PAWS restoration costs money…after harvesting there is inevitably an element of conifer regeneration from the seed bank in the soil. I’m optimistic for the future here in Knapdale, we’re on the right trajectory but we can’t let up.”
